Rental Terms

Effective date: 27 July 2026

What you need to know before booking

These terms summarise the main conditions for hiring a Rideworks motorcycle.

Every hire is also governed by your confirmed booking details, the signed Motorcycle Rental Agreement and the applicable insurance conditions. If there is any inconsistency, the confirmed booking details and signed Motorcycle Rental Agreement take precedence.

Who can hire

Rideworks motorcycles are available to experienced riders only.

Each rider must:

  • be at least 30 years old;
  • hold a current and valid full motorcycle licence;
  • be legally entitled to ride the selected motorcycle in New Zealand;
  • have suitable recent experience on motorcycles of comparable size, weight and power; and
  • meet Rideworks’ identity, safety, suitability and insurance requirements.

International riders may also need an International Driving Permit or an approved English translation of their licence.

Only riders approved by Rideworks and named in the Motorcycle Rental Agreement may ride or move the motorcycle.

Where you can ride

Rideworks motorcycles are provided for lawful, private, self-guided road riding.

They may be ridden only on sealed public roads.

They must not be used on:

  • gravel or unsealed roads;
  • tracks, trails or other off-road routes;
  • beaches or riverbeds;
  • farm, forestry, private, closed or unformed roads;
  • racing circuits or track days; or
  • any route that is not a sealed public road.

Racing, speed testing, rider training, licence testing, courier work, delivery work, rideshare services and commercial carriage are also prohibited.

Use outside these conditions may invalidate insurance and leave the customer responsible for uninsured loss.

Booking and payment

Submitting an availability request does not reserve a motorcycle.

A booking is confirmed when Rideworks:

  • confirms the booking in writing; and
  • receives the required booking deposit.

Confirmation remains subject to final rider approval and completion of all pre-hire requirements.

A booking deposit of 20% of the total booking value, with a minimum of NZ$150 per motorcycle, is required to confirm the booking.

The remaining balance is due 14 days before collection. For bookings made within 14 days of collection, full payment is required when the booking is confirmed.

Before the motorcycle is released, the following must be completed:

  • licence and identity verification;
  • final rider approval;
  • payment of all amounts due;
  • insurance requirements;
  • signing of the Motorcycle Rental Agreement; and
  • the NZ$5,000 card pre-authorisation.

All prices are in New Zealand dollars and include GST unless stated otherwise.

Cancellations

Notice before collection

15–30 days
20% of the booking value
8–14 days
50% of the booking value
7 days or less
100% of the booking value

100% of the booking value

Where Rideworks can rebook the motorcycle for substantially the same dates and reduce its loss, the cancellation charge may be reduced accordingly.

One date change may be made without an administration fee when requested more than 14 days before collection, subject to availability and any difference in rental price.

A NZ$75 administration fee may apply to an approved date change requested within 14 days. A change requested within seven days may be treated as a cancellation and new booking.

Weather, changes in travel plans or a rider’s personal preference do not automatically create a right to a refund.

Where Rideworks cannot safely or lawfully provide the motorcycle, we will discuss the available options, which may include rescheduling, a suitable alternative or a refund of the affected rental amount.

Insurance, excess and card hold

Rideworks vehicle insurance is included, subject to the insurer’s terms, limits and exclusions.

Comparable alternative vehicle insurance may be accepted only where evidence is provided in advance and Rideworks approves the cover in writing. Travel insurance or credit-card excess reimbursement alone is not necessarily comparable vehicle insurance.

The standard customer excess is:

NZ$2,000 for each separate incident or claim.

Where the actual reasonable insured loss is less than NZ$2,000, the customer will be responsible only for the lower amount.

A NZ$5,000 excess may apply where the insurer classifies the loss as theft or non-return by the hirer.

Insurance may not apply where the motorcycle is:

  • ridden on unsealed roads;
  • ridden by an unauthorised or unlicensed person;
  • used recklessly or unlawfully;
  • ridden while the rider is affected by alcohol or drugs; or
  • used in another serious breach connected to the loss.

A physical credit card in the lead rider’s name, with at least NZ$5,000 of available credit, must be presented before the motorcycle is released.

Rideworks will place a temporary NZ$5,000 pre-authorisation on the card. This is not an immediate charge, but it temporarily reduces the available credit.

Following return, the authorisation will either be:

  • reversed where the motorcycle and supplied equipment are returned satisfactorily; or
  • completed for an amount properly owing, with the remaining balance released.

The customer’s bank or card issuer controls how quickly the available credit is restored.

The pre-authorisation is security for amounts owing under the agreement and is not necessarily a limit on the customer’s liability.

Collection and return

Collection is by appointment.

At collection, Rideworks will complete a final identity check, card pre-authorisation, motorcycle condition record, controls briefing and handover.

The motorcycle must be returned:

  • at the agreed date, time and location;
  • with a full tank of the required fuel;
  • reasonably clean;
  • with all keys, luggage and accessories; and
  • with all supplied riding equipment.

The motorcycle’s condition will be recorded using photographs, video or both.

Every drop, fall, tip-over, impact or accident must be reported, even where damage is not immediately visible.

Possible additional charges

Additional charges apply only where reasonably incurred.

GPS and security tracking

Rideworks motorcycles may be fitted with GPS or security-tracking equipment.

Tracking information may be used for legitimate rental, safety and security purposes, including locating an overdue, missing or stolen motorcycle, supporting theft recovery, responding to emergencies and investigating accidents, insurance claims or serious suspected breaches.

Further information is contained in the Rideworks Privacy Policy.

Full Motorcycle Rental Agreement

This page summarises the principal rental conditions. It is not the complete contract or an insurance policy.

Customers will receive access to the full Motorcycle Rental Agreement and their booking-specific terms before the hire is finalised.

The agreement must be completed and signed before the motorcycle is released.
